Sost is a one-street town that exists because of the border. Trucks and buses to and from China stop here for customs and immigration, and travellers heading to the Khunjerab Pass register at the checkpoint before continuing. There are restaurants and shops selling goods from across the border.

Sost is also the base for the Khunjerab National Park. Most visitors reach Sost in the evening and go up to the pass the next morning. The town is cold, windy and treeless compared with Gulmit, so bring warm clothes even in summer.
