Deosai is a high plateau of rolling grassland, often described as the second-highest in the world, and home to the Himalayan brown bear.
The plateau averages about 4,100 metres and is cut off by snow for most of the year; the jeep track between Skardu and Astore opens in early summer and usually closes again as autumn begins. The name is said to come from the Balti for "land of giants".
In July and August the grass is full of wildflowers, marmots whistle from their burrows, and at Sheosar Lake the water reflects the mountains. Weather changes fast at this height, so pack warm layers even in summer. The night sky is exceptionally clear.
