Bahawalpur and Cholistan

Palaces of the Nawabs and the Derawar Fort in the desert

Bahawalpur has the palaces of the former princely state, and Cholistan, the desert beyond, has the remote Derawar Fort.

The Nawabs of Bahawalpur built in a mixture of Italian and Mughal styles, and the Noor Mahal is the grandest example. About 100 kilometres into the desert, Derawar Fort has forty round bastions rising from the sand. The best time is winter, and the annual jeep rally in February draws thousands of visitors.
