Badshahi Mosque

The great red-sandstone mosque of Aurangzeb

The Badshahi Mosque, finished in 1673, was the largest mosque in the world for about three centuries and can still hold tens of thousands in its courtyard.

Aurangzeb built it between 1671 and 1673, facing the Lahore Fort across a wide lawn. The red sandstone is inlaid with white marble. There is a small museum of relics in the entrance, and the best time to come is the late afternoon, when the light on the stone is warm.

It is an active mosque, so dress modestly and check prayer times. Shoes must be removed before entering the courtyard.

Highlights

  • The huge courtyard
  • The three white marble domes
  • The view from the Lahore Fort side at sunset
