Lahore Fort

The royal palace at the edge of the Walled City

Lahore Fort, listed by UNESCO together with the Shalimar Gardens in 1981, is a Mughal palace complex with the Sheesh Mahal and a long wall of tile pictures.

Most of what survives was built under Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan. The Picture Wall, 14 metres high and 450 metres long, is covered in mosaic and tile scenes of elephants, hunters and dancers. Give it at least two hours, and go in the morning before the tour groups.

Highlights

  • The Sheesh Mahal, the Palace of Mirrors
  • The Picture Wall
  • The Alamgiri Gate
