Mehrgarh

One of the earliest farming settlements in South Asia

Mehrgarh, near the Bolan Pass, was settled around 7000 BCE and shows how people first began farming and herding in the region.

French archaeologists began excavating here in 1974 and found layers of settlement that stretch back to about 7000 BCE, with houses, grain stores and some of the earliest evidence of farming and pottery in the region. There is little on-site interpretation, so go with a guide who knows the story. Mehrgarh is reached from Quetta by road, and makes a long day.

Highlights

  • The earliest mud-brick houses
  • The setting at the mouth of the Bolan Pass
