Gulmit is the largest village in Gojal and its administrative centre, with a bazaar, cafés and a small museum of local life, and it makes the most convenient stop for exploring Upper Hunza.
Gulmit is the main stop for most visitors in Gojal. It is large by Gojal standards, with a school, a clinic, a polo ground, shops, and the best choice of restaurants between Karimabad and Sost. A small museum in an old house shows Wakhi clothing, tools and household objects.
Walking from Gulmit
A flat footpath leads along the irrigation channels to Ghulkin in under an hour, passing fields and old houses on the way. From the village you can also see across the valley to the Passu Cones on a clear day. Gulmit is a good place to rest for a night or two before the higher stretch of the road to China.
