Chitral

A mountain town under Tirich Mir, with a fort and a royal mosque

A group of travellers near Chitral

Chitral is the main town of the far north-west, lying below Tirich Mir, with an old fort, a fine mosque and roads to the Kalash valleys.

Chitral was the capital of a princely state until 1969. The fort, home of the Mehtars of Chitral, stands on the river and is still lived in by the family. The Shahi Mosque, built in 1924, has a long courtyard and white domes. In the distance, Tirich Mir, the highest peak of the Hindu Kush, shows itself on clear days.

Since the Lowari Tunnel opened in 2017, the drive from Dir is much more reliable than the old pass. Chitral is also the base for Kalash and the road to Shandur.

Highlights

  • Chitral Fort beside the river
  • The Shahi Mosque of 1924
  • Tirich Mir, 7,708 metres
  • Garam Chashma hot springs
