The Kaghan Valley follows the Kunhar River up from Balakot to Naran, with Saif-ul-Malook Lake and the Babusar Pass above it.
Naran is a bustling little town with restaurants and shops along the river. From here, jeeps climb to Saif-ul-Malook, a lake at about 3,200 metres below the peak of Malika Parbat, and the legend of a prince and a fairy gives the place its name. The road continues over the Babusar Pass to Chilas on the Karakoram Highway, and is usually open from June to October.
Weekends in July and August are crowded with domestic visitors. Midweek, or in September, is calmer.
