Karachi

Pakistan's largest city, a port and a food capital

A camel rider on the beach at Karachi

Karachi is a huge port city on the Arabian Sea with colonial buildings, Mohatta Palace, the Quaid-e-Azam Mausoleum and very good food.

Karachi grew from a fishing village into the commercial centre of the country, and it feels like it: busy, hot, mixed and generous. The old centre around Saddar has Victorian and Gothic buildings such as Frere Hall and the Empress Market. The Mohatta Palace, a pink sandstone mansion of 1927, is now a museum. The Quaid-e-Azam Mausoleum is the tomb of the founder of Pakistan.

Food is the main reason to linger. Try biryani, nihari and fresh fish at the harbour. Winter is the most comfortable season.

Highlights

  • Mohatta Palace
  • Quaid-e-Azam Mausoleum
  • Empress Market and Saddar
  • Biryani, nihari and seafood
  • The beaches at Sandspit and Hawke's Bay
