Mohenjo-daro

A city of the Indus civilisation, built around 2500 BCE

The ruins of Mohenjo-daro, Sindh

Mohenjo-daro was one of the biggest cities of the Indus civilisation, with a street grid, drains and a large public bath. UNESCO listed it in 1980.

The name means "mound of the dead" in Sindhi. The city was abandoned around 1900 BCE and rediscovered in the 1920s. Its streets run on a grid, houses are of fired brick, and nearly every one has a bathroom and a drain, which tells you something about how organised life was. No palace or royal tomb has been found, and the script on the seals has still not been deciphered.

The site is open and exposed, with very little shade. Go early in winter, take water, and hire a guide.

Highlights

  • The Great Bath
  • Straight streets and brick drains
  • The Buddhist stupa on the high mound
  • The site museum
