Makli Necropolis is one of the largest burial grounds in the world, with tombs from the 14th to 18th centuries, and Thatta has the Shah Jahan Mosque.
Makli covers about ten square kilometres of low hills, filled with sandstone and brick tombs carved with floral and geometric patterns. The oldest are of the Samma dynasty, the later ones of the Arghuns, Tarkhans and Mughals. UNESCO listed it in 1981.
In Thatta town, the Shah Jahan Mosque of 1647 is known for its blue tiles and its ninety-three domes. The two sites make a good day trip from Karachi, about two hours away.
